How to participate in a DartmouthVR experiment remotely on your Quest headset
Please follow the steps in this video or follow along with the screenshots below. You'll need to download an APK from the "Download Apps" page on this website and install "Mobile VR Station" on the Meta Horizon Store on your headset.
Part 1: Downloading an APK (App) onto your Meta Quest Headset

1. Open the native Meta Quest Browser in your headset
​This can be found in the taskbar at the bottom of the home screen or in the Apps Library.


2. Go to www.dartmouthvr.com/download-apps and click on the name of the experiment file here (i.e., Place-Flash_1_1.4.apk).
Once you click on the file a new screen with a download box should pop up.

3. Click on the blue "Download" box.
A warning from Google Drive will appear. This is normal and due to the large file size.


4. Select "Download Anyway"
This should begin downloading the App to your headset, and you should see a small popup above the window with the name of the file.
5. Verify the download (optional)
By selecting the three dots in the upper righthand corner and selecting "Downloads" you can verify the installation of
You are now ready to move on to Part 2: Installing the APK using Mobile VR Station!
Part 2: Installing the APK (App) using Mobile VR Station


1. Download and start the "Mobile VR station" App from the Meta Horizon store
The logo is a black galaxy with a small red robot. Click "get" or "install" after searching the store to begin the installation. Then press start to open the app.
When you open Mobile VR station for the first time, you will see a pop up "Allow Permissions, Allows Mobile VR Station Unified access to photos and media on your device?"
2. Select "Allow" and check the box to save your preferences.

3. Select the red power button.
Press the trigger button on a controller to see a ray. Hold a grip button to move the menu around.

4. Select "Android fixes... Configuration Wizard"
The folder has a blue and black gear icons and is at the bottom of the first page.

5. Select the last option, "Show All Options"
The icon is a gray book with a blue "i".

6. Select the 2nd folder, "See the popup Configure Scoped Storage"
This is the second folder in this page.

7. Select the last folder, "For read Configure Scoped Storage"
This is the only plain, yellow folder on this onfiguration wizard page.

8. Select the first option "Step 1: Request Access"
The logo is a grey box with a blue play button.

10. Select the "Download" folder
​This folder is usually on the right side of the second column in the popup. Inside the Download folder yo should see the name of the app(s) you previously downloaded (I.e.. Place-Flash Winter).

9. Click on your device/the name of your headset (I.e. “Quest 2” or “Standalone HMD”).
Ignore the popup that says "Can't use this folder." Look for the name of your headset or "Standalone HMD" in the upper left corner of the Files popup and select it.
Note: From here step 9 on out, you will no longer be navigating in Mobile VR station, but it will remain open in the background.
Not seeing a pop-up? If you do not see the Files popup or if you don't see a popup warning about personal data after step 11, please try exiting Mobile VR station, restarting your headset, and following steps 1-8 of Part 2 again. If you still cannot see the popup, please see this troubleshooting page.
Reminder: While navigating the Files popup you will likely see a "Can't use this folder/Create New Folder" banner on the top of all page. Ignore this warning and do not create a new folder.

11. Click on the square four arrows in the upper right-hand corner of the App.
The App you downloaded will likely be the only file in the "Download" folder and have an Android logo on it. It may have a slightly different name.

13. Select "Continue"​
The Robertson Lab at Dartmouth College only publishes Apps that have been safely developed and tested for research purposes and pose no risk to personal data.
You are now ready to move on to Part 3: Adjusting your headset and opening the APK (App) file!

14. Select "Update"
You should see a pop-up with a white cube that asks if you would like to update the app. The name of the app might appear different than it did when downloaded. ​
15. Select "Done"
You should see a similar pop-up with the name of the app that says "App Installed. Select done and exit Mobile VR Station.​
Part 3: Adjusting your headset and opening the APK (App) file

Before opening the installed app and beginning the experiment, it’s important to adjust the position and settings of your headset to ensure that the experiment runs smoothly.
1. Check the fit of your headset - please ensure your headset is on and secure using this reference image.

Please shake your head up and down and left and right. Does your headset stay securely in position?

2. Check movement tracking settings - please ensure that you have turned on all movement tracking settings, including “Hand and body tracking” and “Eyetracking” (if you are using a Quest Pro).

Note: If you are using a Quest Pro, please calibrate and test the eye tracking on your headset by following these instructions before beginning the experiment.


3. Check connection settings - please ensure your headset is connected to a stable internet connection via WIFI.
This is critical for data collection.
Ensure Eye Tracking is on for Quest Pro headsets only
Now that your headset is comfortably on and the settings are adjusted, you are ready to open the App you installed and participate in the experiment.

4. Go to the Apps from "Unknown Sources" page in the app library
On the lefthand side of the app library, you should see a few different categories of menus, including “Apps from unknown sources.”
